Creative Cardboard Printing for Kids – A Fun and Easy Paint Lesson

In today’s creative lesson, we’re going to make brilliant textured prints using layers of cardboard. Kids will love this fun way to create pictures they can print again and again.

This is a great hands-on painting lesson for all ages. The kids will love how their designs can be reused to make different prints with different colours. It’s perfect for home or school, and a fun way to explore textures and patterns using everyday materials.

Steps to Create Cardboard Prints:

  1. Cut out shapes.

  2. Use scissors to cut simple shapes from the cardboard—try stars, fruit shapes, zig-zags, or circles.

  3. Glue the shapes.

  4. Stick the shapes onto another flat piece of cardboard to make a raised design. You can add more layers to make it pop out.

  5. Let it dry. Leave your design to dry completely. This will become your “print base” and can be used over and over again.

  6. Roll on the Super Tempera paint.

  7. Once dry, roll paint over the top of your cardboard base. Use scrap paper to roll off any extra paint—less is more here.

  8. Make your print.

  9. Press a clean piece of paper on top of your paint-covered cardboard. Press gently all over, then peel it back to see your print!

Alternative tip:

Place the paper on the dry cardboard base first, then roll lightly with almost no Super Tempera paint on your roller. It’ll work like a rubbing and show the shape underneath—kids love this effect!
