An easy, creative painting lesson plan for school or home
Make Bright and Fun Vegetable Prints with Paint:
Today we’re making colourful vegetable prints using everyday veggies and poster paint. This is a simple, hands-on activity that kids will love—perfect for school art or at home with parents.
What You’ll Need:
Newspaper or a cover sheet for the table
Sharp knife – for adults only
Raw vegetables – potatoes, carrots, celery, broccoli, corn on the cob
FAS Super Tempera poster paint
Shallow trays or plates
Paint Roller is helpful
Paper – any kind will do
Apron and paper towels

Let’s Get Started:
Cover your table with newspaper. Things might get messy—in the best way!
Adults: Carefully cut the vegetables so they have a flat surface. You can cut potatoes into shapes like stars or hearts, or just cut them in half.
Pour the Super Tempera paint into the trays—one colour per tray works best. You can even try mixing new and exciting colours.
Dip the cut side of the vegetable into the paint. Make sure it’s well-coated but not dripping.
Press the painted side onto the paper—lift it off and you’ve made a print!
Try different vegetables to see what patterns they make. Corn rolls a cool texture, and celery makes great trees!
Let the prints dry. Then, if you like, use a felt pen to draw on arms, legs or faces.

TIPS:
Kids love making funny characters with their prints. Add googly eyes if you’ve got them!
Always keep knives and sharp tools out of children’s reach.
This activity works great as a group project—each child can try a different veggie.
That’s it! A fun, creative paint activity using things you already have at home or in the classroom. Kids enjoy the sensory play, the colour mixing, and the surprise of seeing what shapes come out. It’s a great way to explore textures and be creative with simple tools.
