Safe and Fun Paper Batik for Kids:
Today, we’re going to create something exciting – a colourful Paper Batik!
This is a simple, safe, and fun project that gives kids the look of traditional batik without needing hot wax. Children will love the process of crumpling and colouring, and they’ll end up with unique, eye-catching artwork.
What You Will Need:
Good quality cartridge paper or pale-coloured sugar paper
Chalk (optional for sketching)
Stiff paintbrush
Blutak (for cleaning excess crayon)
Newspaper (for blotting excess dye)
Boards (for flattening the final artwork)
Steps to Create Your Paper Batik:
Plan your design
Start by planning your picture on cartridge or sugar paper. Encourage bold designs! If you’re working with younger kids, let them sketch with chalk first. Chalk lines are easy to rub out and redo.

Colour it in
Use FAS wax crayons to colour your design. Go for bold, bright colours and make sure the paper is fully covered with strong, even layers. Remember, any uncoloured spots will get filled in by the dye later.

Clean up the crayon flecks
Pick up any loose bits of crayon with a small piece of Blutak. Just press the Blutak onto the paper gently, and it will lift the flecks without smudging your work.

Crumple it up
Now for the fun part! Carefully crumple your artwork into a tight ball. Open it up, then crumple it again. Do this a few times, but be gentle so the paper doesn’t tear. This creates tiny cracks in the wax, which is key to the batik effect.

Apply the FAS Painting Dye
Lay the crumpled paper flat and brush FAS Painting Dye over the entire surface. Work the dye into all the little cracks. You can use traditional black dye or experiment with colours like brown, blue, or green for different effects.
Blot and dry
Blot any excess dye with newspaper. Once the dye has dried completely, flatten the paper between boards to prepare it for display.

Conclusion:
This SAFE Paper Batik project is a brilliant way to introduce children to art techniques inspired by traditional crafts. The process is hands-on and engaging, and the results are always striking. Whether in the classroom or at home, kids will have a blast making their very own batik masterpieces!
