Try these 3 easy and creative painting techniques using FAS Super Tempera Paint—perfect for art teachers and parents at home. Great fun for kids!
Let’s get painting!
Today, we’re going to try three really fun techniques using FAS Super Tempera Paint. These are simple tricks that make ordinary paint look extra special. The kids will love the effects, and they’re easy to set up and clean up. You don’t need fancy materials—just your usual paints and a brush.
What You’ll Need:
Paintbrushes (flat and round)
A dry brush (clean)
White A3 or A4 art paper
Water pots and cloths
Scratch tools (the handle end of a brush or a blunt pencil)
Paint palette (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Double-Loading
This is a great way to paint quickly and get a cool mix of colours straight on the brush.
Choose 3–5 colours of paint (include white if you can).
Dip your brush into one colour (e.g., red).
Then lightly dip the tip into another colour (e.g., white).
Paint straight onto your paper. You’ll see the colours streak together.
Repeat and experiment—try three colours on one brush!
Tip: Don’t rinse your brush every time—you want leftover colour to help blend the next layer.
Why this works: It’s a quick way to add colour and texture—great when time is short.
2. Scratching
This technique is perfect for adding cool patterns and texture to any artwork. It's all about painting an undercolour first and using it to bring your artwork to life. Like this bird (see below). So easy but very effective.
Paint the whole page with one colour. Let it dry for about 5 minutes.
Brush a second colour over the top.
While the top layer is still wet, use the back of a brush to scratch patterns, swirls, or shapes.
Watch as the first colour peeks through!
Why this works: Kids love this—it feels like drawing into the paint. It also teaches layering and texture.

3. Smoothing
This one’s all about finishing touches. It helps kids learn how to tidy up their painting.
Paint the background of your picture like normal.
Wait a few minutes until it’s just slightly tacky.
Grab a dry, flat brush and gently brush over the painted area.
Watch globs even out into a smooth finish.
Why this works: It makes the paint look clean and professional. Kids take pride in their work when it looks polished.
These techniques are simple but make a big difference. Kids will be amazed at what they can do with just a brush and a bit of paint. Try them during your next art session or at home on a rainy afternoon.
These are my go-to favourites and work brilliantly with FAS Super Tempera Paint.
Have a go, see what happens, and enjoy the mess and magic of art.
