Scratch Reveal Paintings with FAS Super Tempera

An easy and magical art lesson kids will love!

Today we’re making Scratch Paintings using crayons and black paint. It’s like magic reveal art – children create colourful patterns, then cover them with black, and scratch out their own designs to bring the colours back. Kids love this – it’s simple, bright, and fun.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Label the back of each child’s paper first – you’ll thank yourself later!

  2. Use crayons or oil pastels to cover the whole page in bright colours. Press hard – the more colour, the better the result.

  3. Once the whole sheet is covered, paint over it with black tempera paint or Indian ink. Let it dry fully. (Indian ink is best for older children as it stains.)

Shortcut option: Cover the colours with a thick black crayon instead of paint – this is quicker but less bold.

  4. Now for the fun part – use toothpicks or popsicle sticks to scratch designs into the black. The colours underneath will magically show through!

That’s it!

Kids can create anything from patterns, shapes, animals, or even their name. This lesson suits all ages and works well in the classroom or at home. If you’re short on time, use coloured card and skip the crayon step – just paint black over the card and scratch away.

Tip: Try displaying these on coloured paper for an extra pop of colour!
